That Unruly Sun (Shaker interiors) (2016 – )

In 2016, at the invitation of the Shaker Museum in Chatham, NY, I began photographing the interiors of the Shaker buildings at the North Family community at Mount Lebanon. Fascinated by the light effects the Shakers not only allowed but encouraged in their buildings, I began photographing at other Shaker communities in the northeast and also in Kentucky. Although BCB Gallery in Hudson hosted a show of some of this work in 2018, I do not consider the project finished. My essay “What I wanted to Tell you About the Wind,” published in Orion Magazine in 2021, explores some of the questions raised by the unruly light in Shaker buildings.
